Petition Goal: Allowing producers of vegan foods to keep the classical and familiar terms so customers in the European Union can easily recognize their products

Petition Text

Dear vegan friends, I am deeply disappointed to learn about a bill that would chance the course of veganism in the European Union for a long time. I didn’t think we would be having this conversation, especially in the EU, but here we are.

The main disruption to the sector is the following: producers of plant-bases foods will be required to use other terms that are usually associated with meat or dairy. Consequently, vegan products will feature new names, completely unknown to the public – instead of using names such as veggie burger, yogurt style and cheese substitute. A group of environmental activists is now pushing the people in power to outlaw this measure that would essentially bully plant-based producers in favour of the meat and dairy industry.

Here is what a spokesperson of the Humane Society International had to say in a statement: This summer, Europe has seen several devastating heatwaves and all the MEPs are doing is spending precious time trying to limit the growth of plant-based products, instead of coming up with a sustainable strategy to promote them. We all need to making agriculture more sustainable and climate friendly. The European vegetarian / vegan food market has grown exponentially over the past few years and consumers are more aware than ever about what they should be eating; the proposed law with diminish this level of awareness and will prevent customers from choosing products that are animal-free.

It is importan to point out that the veganism is the only way to a sustainable agriculture, that slow down climate change. It is esssential the European Union promotes more vegan products and ultimately allow the customers to make up their own minds.

Please sign the petition and demand that the EU rethinks its strategy and does not ban plant based producers from using the widely known terms on packaging. We, the undersigned, are not telling anyone to stop eating meat, we only ask that vegan products are given a chance to compete with other animal products.

This cause is of utmost importance and I wish to thank everyone who took the time to join my efforts into making this world greener and conserving the environment.
