Petition Objective: To ensure that US women athletes are paid accordingly. We support equal pay in soccer, regardless of gender
Petition Text
As you probably might recollect, the US Soccer Women’s Team produce a stellar performace at FIFA World Cup this summer in France. Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd and her colleagues were simply superb and cruise to another world title without bearing a sweat.
Unfortunately, it seems that women in America are not paid equally for their work, even if they perform better than men (let us not forget that the US Men’s team didn’t even qualify that the 2018 FIFA World Cup In Russia). The case of equal pay will head to the courts in 2020, but it doesn’t have to come to this, should the Federation starts treating women athletes with dignity and respect. These women in the photo above are really good at what they do – they are actually the best in the world, yet the continue to be underpaid. This situation must change.
According to the above-mentioned lawsuit, a male player receives up to three times as much money per game as a female player, even though women play many more games than their male conterparts last year; the same lawsuit points out that this staggering difference continues to exist despite that women starts have obtained better sponsorships and promotions that US male players (which obviously means that marketers were much more interested in featuring starts like Alex Morgan or Christen Press in their commercials rather than unknown, average male players).
The disparities are unbelievably high and must end as soon as possible. In a country where whre women ear between 50 to 80 cents for each dollar earned by a man, the need for a change is vital. The US women soccer team deserves to be recognised for the glorious and extraordinary performances it has achieved over the past years.
We, the undersigned, are calling on the US Federation to show goodwill and do the the right thing: bring the pay gap to zero before this unwanted, but necessary lawsuit kicks in.
